QUOTE (asoldier @ Jun 11 2017, 09:03 PM) *
Is anyone active anymore?

The Lum forums are not really active any more. A lot of the collaboration between artists happens on FB in a private group.

Adventure Released

The Luminarium is proud to present our 20th exhibit Adventure!

It is quite a milestone for us and we are glad to share with you what is our biggest, and quite possibly best, release yet. Adventure explores that inner curiosity that drives so much of humanities achievements. That desire to know what is over the horizon, what is beyond the next turn. The Luminarium has been quite an adventure for many of us over the course of our 20 releases and long may it continue into the future. Adventure holds over 50 pieces of artwork and music, with pieces from old hands like Glenn Clovis, Chris Cold and Alex Fralin, some outstanding work from Kuldar Leement as well as some notable debut's from Erik Schumacher, Anna Hollinrake, Mattais Utomo, Jakob Hansson and Scott Steadman.

Come and Join us on our Adventure: http://www.theluminarium.net/v3/exhibits.php?id=20

Hosting Upgrade

With this new release comes a move to an upgraded web server. The Luminarium has grown in popularity over the last few years, and our old host could not keep up with the bandwidth that we required to run the website and present the exhibits. We had to make the decision to migrate the website to a new hosting provider that will allow us to grow much more in the future and scale with our needs. We apologize for the downtime over the last fews days, but we are excited for the possibilities that this new server will give us. So expect good things to come over the next few months have a nice day.png

Thanks,
The Luminarium Staff

Thanks, I know the video sucks, but the app we were supposed to advertise was horrible. The whole assignment is stupid, but the grades are based on the number of views we get. Thanks for the help guys.

Hey guys, please watch this video and share it with your friends. It's for a class project, and the more views we get, the better the grade will be. Thanks!

I very much like the minimalistic web 2.0 style in these sites. The first and the last are the best ones. The two broken up orange navigation bar / banner kind of make the page feel awkward on the second one, and the third one has a bit too much going on in the header area. Overall these are some nice designs though.

Hello everyone,

Our hosting company will be rebooting our server to install a new kernel from around 3:00-5:00 am CST (about 12 hours from now). Our site will most likely be down during that period, but will be back up shortly after that. Just a heads up in case any of you are wondering.

Cheers!

Id like to see the research that shows that 85% number. I don't think it's accurate. And it's something like 25% of users on the internet cant use flash because either they don't have it in their browser or it's blocked behind a school/company/network firewall

If you try dreamweaver though (or frontpage I guess, but i'd stick with dreamweaver), they offer both a code view and a design view. It's two ways to design the same site. If you don't know any code, you can design it all in design view, in a WYSIWYG style editor. If you have any sort of submission forms or a backend database of any sort though, you are going to need to know how to do some sort of coding. Also the design view isn't perfect, and if there are any bugs in certain browsers, it really helps to know the code in order to track down the bug and fix it.

HTML really isn't as daunting as it sounds. It does take a lot of time to code a website though, I'm not going to fool you on that. The majority of that time though is spent tweaking really minor things that for some reason don't work the way you think they should. So even though it takes time, it's really not too difficult.

If you want a fancy portfolio with animations and everything, then you will either be needing javascript or flash, both of which are much harder to learn since they have/use programming/scripting languages unlike HTML which is a markup language. If you want a site like this, you can always buy a prebuilt template online (usually run $50-200) and then customize it to your needs, or you can hire a web designer. There is a reason web design costs quite a bit of money. If it was really easy and fast to do, then everyone would just do it themselves.

If you really want a portfolio, I wouldn't give up on it, but at the same time I am just trying to get you realistic expectations.

We used to have a flash site, but we switched everything over to an HTML/CSS site a little over a year ago so that everyone can view our exhibits now. (Some people don't have flash support, especially on mobile devices.) So our whole site is coded in HTML and CSS. The music player uses flash just because it's the most elegant way to do it, there isn't really a way around that until HTML 5 is more widespread. We have a couple javascript scripts to make navigation easier, but the site functions just fine without those.

Pretty much we designed it like this for accessibility. If you are making an online portfolio, you might want to take these things into consideration.

I also created a backend system that uses a database to store all of the images and the submission process so when it's time to release an exhibit, it's a lot less work for the admins since the images are already stored on the server with all of the information about them (descriptions, artists), and each piece is automatically added to that artist's profile. This is a pretty complicated system though, and is most likely not needed for a single individual.

I dual boot with Open SUSE 11, but honestly I never actually use it so I do't really know much about it. I just never really got into linux, so I won't be much help. One thing you might not know though, is that you can run some windows programs through a linux program called Wine. Might be helpful is you need to run some windows only software on your linux machine.

i use ixwebhosting. Some people complain about their service, but I've only had one major problem in the two-three years i've been with them, and they were able to resolve it very fast. They are very cheap, although I believe their servers are based in the US, which might not be that great if you live in Europe.

I'm just glad USA tied it up just now. We really need the win, but we might make it with a draw.

I personally wouldn't do this sort of this online, big potential to get ripped off. I'd ask for a sum of money upfront for specific rights (print as many copies as you want for x,y,z devices) or something like that. You might make more if it doesn't take off, but you might make less if he sells a ton. It's much safer though. Although I doubt he would do this because he doesn't know if they are going to sell or not.

I'm afraid it could violate copyright laws and you could get a lawsuit if that design gets approved and printed. I's clearly a play on The A Team, even with the same characters, although slightly modified.

Ok guys, Judging has been underway for a week now, but we are still trying to pick a winner. This was a close one! We will post the results once we determine the placings.

Yeah it could be the router you are behind. There might be a firewall in place that is blocking dA for some reason. Also if you are at a school or something they might be blocking the site for "inappropriate content" as they like to call it. So any computer behind their network wouldn't be able to access those sites, except through a proxy.

Not a big fan of the first or third, they look pretty blurry, although the composition on the first is better than the third. The second one is my favorite. This only problem I see with that one is the lighting of the girl's legs where is looks like you just burned/dodged them, and it feels too unnatural.

The perspective seems off on some of the angles, such as the first row middle picture and especially the second row far left picture. Also, I don't really like that yellow railings. I would prefer a dark brown or a black, and it would like much more elegant.
